Devyn is a 3 year old living with Spina Bifida.
Devyn is a 3 year old living with Spina Bifida, a congenital condition that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not develop properly prenatal. The condition has varying impacts on a person’s physical abilities and internal processes, including weak or stiff muscles, urinary and gastrointestinal complications, hunched back, and paralysis.
Devyn is an active, growing little boy. He is a child of a United States veteran and has utilized a gait trainer during his formative years for walking assistance.
When Devyn outgrew his baby/toddler-sized gait trainer, his parents went through the proper avenues to secure him a new one. Unfortunately, even though Devyn and his family have insurance, the provider would not cover the cost of a new, correctly sized gait trainer.
Without this piece of equipment, Devyn’s mobility and independence is severely hindered. Life without a gait trainer is not an option for Devyn; but with the high cost, neither was purchasing one without insurance. Knowing about our services, the local VA referred Devyn to our program, and with help from the Texas Veterans Commission, we successfully put Devyn through our Assistive Technology Financial Aid Program and purchased a brand new, appropriately sized Crocodile brand Gait Trainer.
Because of Project MEND, Devyn is now back to his active, mobile self – just as a 3 year old should be!
