George, Project MEND client, received a refurbished power chair through our Project MEND Veterans program

George

With so many denials from his insurance company, George began to feel helpless.

The most amazing part? It just so happens that the very same week George came to us, a fellow veteran passed and his wife donated the perfect power chair to Project MEND. Thanks to a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission, we were able to refurbish and sanitize the donated power chair and provide it to George!

George, a United States Army veteran, was referred to Project MEND by a local doctor’s office in Castroville, Texas. George has cerebellar ataxia, which causes his cerebellum to become inflamed or damaged, which in return leaves George with the inability to coordinate balance, gait, extremities, and eye movements.

George’s doctors had been trying to get him a power chair from his insurance company for over a year.

With denial after denial from the insurance company, George began to feel helpless and secluded from the world, because he needed a power chair to be mobile and independent. Furthermore, he needed a power chair to safely reside in his home, as his disease had caused many falls over the past year.

It seemed we were the solution for George’s needs.
